Legality in Canada

IPTV technology is legal in Canada. Bell Fibe TV, Telus Optik TV and Rogers Ignite TV are all delivered over IP. The Copyright Act governs whether a distributor has the right to retransmit the channels it offers, and that is what determines whether a specific service is operating legally.

Canada has been active in this area: the Federal Court has granted dynamic blocking orders requiring ISPs to block unauthorised NHL and other live-sport streams during games, and rights holders (Bell, Rogers, Québecor) pursue operators and sellers. Enforcement targets services rather than individual viewers, but you should still:

• Choose a provider that is transparent about its service, offers a trial and has responsive support.
• Avoid "lifetime" subscriptions, gift-card payments and anonymous sellers.
