Cost
This is where most people start, and where the gap is largest. A cable or satellite bill has four layers: the base package, the sport or movie add-ons, the equipment rental per box, and the price increase that arrives when the promotional period ends. Add a second box for the bedroom and the total for a household that watches live sport climbs well past €100 per month in most European markets, and past $150 in the United States.

Be honest with yourself about one hidden cost, though: IPTV needs good broadband. If you are on a slow or unstable connection and would need to upgrade it, factor that in.
Channels and content
Cable gives you one country's package, curated by one operator. That is fine if you only watch domestic channels. It falls apart the moment you want French news in Toronto, Bundesliga in Manchester, or Italian Serie A in Sydney.

Here cable is genuinely better, and it is worth saying plainly. A satellite signal does not care that your teenager is downloading a game update. An IPTV stream does.
In practice, the reliability gap closes almost completely when three things are true: the streaming device is wired or on strong 5 GHz Wi-Fi, the provider runs a proper network with published status and support, and you use a modern player app with a sensible buffer setting.
