The good news is that the apps that do exist are solid, that the Apple TV 4K is one of the best streaming devices you can buy for live television, and that an iPhone or iPad makes a first-rate second screen. IPTV Smarters Pro
Free, in the App Store on iPhone, iPad and Apple TV, and the app we recommend first on every Apple device. Logging in with the Xtream Codes details from IPTV-6 populates Live TV, Movies and Series, loads the guide, and enables catch-up with no extra configuration. The iPad version makes good use of the larger screen with a channel list beside the player, and the tvOS version is navigable with the Siri Remote. Multi-screen is available on iPad, showing up to four streams at once, each counting as a connection.
GSE Smart IPTV
GSE started on iOS and it shows: the interface is touch-first, playlist management is the best of any iOS player, and it handles multiple playlists and EPG sources cleanly. It is a good choice if you keep several playlists or want fine control over the guide. The free version shows ads; the paid version removes them. On Apple TV it is usable but less polished than on iPad.
XCIPTV
Worth having as a second app on iPhone. Its alternative player engine sometimes plays a stream that stutters elsewhere, and it supports catch-up and recording. Availability on Apple TV varies.
VLC
Paste the M3U link into VLC's network stream option and you can confirm a channel plays. There is no guide, no account integration and no catch-up. It is a diagnostic tool; do not use it as your daily player.

iPhone and iPad
- Install IPTV Smarters Pro from the App Store.
- Open it, choose "Login with Xtream Codes API", and enter the server URL, username and password from your IPTV-6 welcome email. Copying and pasting from the email avoids typos.
- Wait for the guide to load, then hide the countries you never watch in the settings.
- Optionally allow notifications so the app can remind you of a programme, and set the video player to the native option for hardware decoding.
Apple TV
- Open the App Store on the Apple TV and install IPTV Smarters Pro. If you have already installed it on your iPhone, it appears under Purchased.
- Log in with the same Xtream Codes details. Typing on the Apple TV is easiest with the iPhone keyboard prompt that appears automatically when a text field is selected.
- Turn on frame-rate matching (see the tips below) before you watch any sport.

Apple TV: the best sport device most people overlook
The Apple TV 4K deserves a specific mention. It has a fast processor that handles a 25,000-channel list without lag, an Ethernet port on the higher-storage model, HDR and Dolby Atmos passthrough, and, most importantly for live sport, a system-wide frame-rate matching option.
Turn it on: Settings, Video and Audio, Match Content, then enable Match Frame Rate and Match Dynamic Range. Once enabled, the Apple TV switches its output to 50 Hz for Premier League, Ligue 1 and Bundesliga football, and to 60 Hz for NFL and other American sport. The difference on a fast counter-attack is obvious once you have seen it.
Because IPTV-6 delivers sports channels at the broadcaster's native frame rate and up to 4K, the Apple TV 4K on a wired connection is about as good as IPTV gets. Budget 25 Mbps for 4K and 10 Mbps for HD, measured at the device.
iPhone and iPad tips
Second screen, not main screen. An iPad on the sofa showing the multiplex while the TV shows the main match is the classic use. Each stream counts as a connection; the 6-month and 12-month IPTV-6 plans include 2, and extra connections cost €3 per month on the pricing page.
Use Wi-Fi 5 GHz or better. Phones move around the house and drop to 2.4 GHz at the edges. If a stream stutters in the kitchen but not in the living room, that is why.
Mobile data. IPTV works over 4G and 5G but an HD stream uses roughly 4–5 GB per hour, so check your data allowance before watching a full match on cellular. The app's settings often let you cap quality on mobile data.
Picture-in-picture. IPTV Smarters Pro and GSE support iOS picture-in-picture, so the match keeps playing in a corner while you use another app.
Background audio. Useful for radio-style channels and commentary; enable it in the app settings if you want the audio to continue when the screen locks.
Battery. Video decoding is efficient on modern iPhones, but a two-hour match will still take a noticeable chunk. Keep the charger nearby for long sessions.
AirPlay and casting
Any IPTV app on an iPhone or iPad can AirPlay to an Apple TV or to an AirPlay-compatible Samsung or LG TV. It is fine for showing a match at a friend's house or on a TV without an app. For everyday use it has three drawbacks: the phone is tied up, the phone's battery drains, and the stream is often re-encoded on the way, so the picture is softer than the native app on the TV. If you find yourself AirPlaying every evening, install the app on the Apple TV or add a Fire TV Stick to the TV instead.
Common problems on Apple devices
- App disappears from the App Store. Occasionally an IPTV player is removed and later returns. Your subscription is unaffected; install another App Store player and enter the same details. Because IPTV-6 supplies both M3U and Xtream Codes credentials, you are never locked to one app.
- Guide is empty. Almost always an M3U login without the EPG URL. Switch to the Xtream Codes login or add the EPG URL from your welcome email. Other causes are in EPG not working.

- Audio out of sync. Try the alternative player engine in the app settings, or a different app such as XCIPTV.

Installing an IPTV app from the App Store is legal, and IPTV as a technology is the same method every broadcaster uses for its own iOS app. Licensing of the channels a provider carries differs by country; IPTV-6 does not claim to hold broadcast rights, and you should check the rules where you live.
