"Android TV" includes a lot of hardware:

TiviMate: the one to install first

Smarters runs on Android TV, Android phones, iOS, Samsung, LG and Windows, so households with a mix of devices often standardise on it. The interface is simpler than TiviMate's, catch-up is free, and the multi-screen mode shows up to four streams (each counts as a connection). It is a little heavier and its guide is slower to draw, but it is a perfectly good daily app, and the obvious choice for beginners.
XCIPTV: the second opinion
XCIPTV lets you choose between player engines, which matters when a particular channel stutters or has audio sync problems in another app. It supports recording and catch-up and has a cleaner remote-driven interface than Smarters. Keep it installed as a fallback.
GSE Smart IPTV: for phones
GSE is a good app on a phone or tablet, with a touch interface and playlist management. On a TV with a remote it is awkward. If you use an Android phone as a second screen, it is a reasonable choice there.
VLC: testing only
VLC plays an M3U link and nothing more. Use it to confirm a stream works when troubleshooting, then go back to a real IPTV app.
Setup summary

- Install the app from the Play Store on the TV. For an app that is not listed, install it as an APK using a file manager or the Downloader app from the Play Store.

Android TV-specific tips
Use Ethernet. Almost every Android TV box and TV has an Ethernet port. Use it. A wired connection removes the most common cause of buffering in one step. If you must use Wi-Fi, use 5 GHz and keep the box away from the back of the TV.
Turn on frame-rate matching at the system level as well as in the app. On a Shield: Settings, Display & Sound, Match content frame rate. On Google TV: Settings, Display & Sound, Match content. Without the system setting, the app cannot switch the output, and 50fps Bundesliga or Premier League footage will judder on a 60 Hz output.
Enable the right audio passthrough. If you have a soundbar or AV receiver, set the box to pass through Dolby Digital and the app to use passthrough. Many sports channels carry 5.1 audio.
Watch for memory on cheap boxes. A box with 1 GB of RAM will crawl through a 25,000-channel playlist. Hide unused groups in the app, and use the Xtream Codes login rather than M3U, which loads categories on demand instead of parsing the whole list.
Disable aggressive battery or background restrictions on Android phones, or the EPG refresh may be killed before it finishes.
Restart after system updates. Google TV updates occasionally reset the frame-rate setting; check it after an update.
Picture quality: what Android TV can do
