IPTV for Expats 2026: Watch Home TV Abroad from France, the UK, USA, Canada or Australia

Living abroad and missing your home channels? How expats use IPTV to watch French, British, American, Canadian and Australian TV overseas, with time-zone, device and legal notes.

Scritto da IPTV-6 Editorial Team 7 min di lettura

Twenty years ago an expat's link to home television was a satellite dish pointed at a bird that did not quite reach, or a relative posting VHS tapes. Now it is a Fire TV Stick in a suitcase and an internet connection. This guide is for the French family in Montreal, the British retirees on the Costa Blanca, the American posted to Frankfurt, the Canadian snowbird in Florida and the Australian in London: what home TV you can expect, how to deal with time zones, what to pack, and the honest position on the legal side.

What "home TV" means for each country

IPTV-6 carries local channel groups for each market, with the guide in the right language. The channels expats ask about most:

France abroad. TF1, France 2, France 3, M6, Canal+, Arte and the news channels (BFM TV, CNews, LCI, franceinfo), plus beIN Sports, Canal+ Sport, RMC Sport and DAZN France for Ligue 1, Top 14 and the Tour de France. Kids' channels (Gulli, Canal J, Piwi+) matter to families raising bilingual children. Full list on the France page; the Ligue 1 specifics are in Watch Ligue 1 with IPTV.

UK abroad. BBC One and Two, ITV1, Channel 4, Channel 5, Sky Atlantic, Dave, and the sports line-up: Sky Sports Main Event, Premier League and Football, TNT Sports 1โ€“4, Sky Sports F1 and Cricket. CBeebies and CBBC for children. Regional feeds (BBC Scotland, S4C, STV) for those who want the local news from home. See the UK page and Watch the Premier League with IPTV.

USA abroad. The broadcast networks (ABC, CBS, NBC, FOX) including local affiliates, cable staples (AMC, FX, HBO, Showtime), news (CNN, Fox News, MSNBC), and ESPN, FS1, NFL Network and NFL RedZone for the football season. Details on the USA page and in Watch the NFL with IPTV.

Canada abroad. CBC, CTV, Global and Citytv, French-language TVA, Noovo and ICI Tรฉlรฉ, and the sports channels that matter to Canadians away from home: TSN, Sportsnet, RDS and Hockey Night in Canada. Support is available in French as well as English. See the Canada page.

Australia abroad. ABC TV, SBS, Seven, Nine and 10, the news channels, and Fox Sports, Fox League, Fox Footy and Fox Cricket for the AFL, NRL and the summer of cricket. See the Australia page.

Time zones: the real expat problem

The channels are easy. Watching the 3pm Saturday match from Sydney at 1am is not. Three tools help.

The guide converts times for you. The EPG displays programmes in your device's local time. If the guide looks wrong, it is nearly always the device time zone rather than the provider; the fix is in IPTV EPG not working.

Catch-up replaces the alarm clock. Every IPTV-6 plan includes catch-up, so the match, the evening news or the Saturday night show plays from the start whenever you wake up. The window is 3 days on the monthly plan, 7 days on the quarterly and 6-month plans, and 14 days on the annual plan. For expats the annual plan is worth it for the 14-day window alone; a fortnight of home TV waits for you after a trip.

Offsets shift by an hour around daylight-saving changes, which do not happen on the same dates in Europe, North America and Australia. Trust the guide over the table.

What to pack

A Fire TV Stick is the expat's best friend: it fits in a coat pocket, works on any TV with an HDMI port, and holds your login. Set it up before you leave using the Fire TV Stick guide, and add a compact USB power adapter with the right plug for your destination. Bring the HDMI extender; hotel TVs often have recessed ports.

A phone or tablet is the backup. IPTV Smarters or GSE on iPhone and iPad covers a hotel room or a train, and a phone hotspot rescues the evening when the rental Wi-Fi refuses to cooperate.

For a permanent home abroad, the Smart TV app or an Android TV box on Ethernet is the stable long-term setup; the Smart TV guide and Android guide cover both.

Hotel and rental Wi-Fi

Three problems come up repeatedly:

  • Captive portals. Hotel networks show a login page in a browser before allowing traffic. A Fire TV Stick cannot always complete it. Fix: use the Stick's built-in browser to open any website, which usually triggers the portal; or share your phone's connection.
  • Blocked ports and throttled video. Some hotel networks limit video traffic. A phone hotspot on local 4G/5G is the practical answer for a short stay; buy a local SIM or eSIM with a generous data allowance. An HD stream uses roughly 2โ€“3 GB per hour, 4K considerably more.
  • Shared networks at peak. A rental complex with one connection for forty flats will buffer at 9pm regardless of your provider. Use FHD rather than 4K feeds and a larger app buffer; the settings are in How to fix IPTV buffering.

Sharing with family at home

The 6-month and annual plans include two simultaneous connections, and the connections do not have to be in the same country. A common arrangement: parents in Lyon on the Smart TV, their daughter in Montreal on a Fire TV Stick, one subscription. If a third screen is needed at the same time, an extra connection costs โ‚ฌ3 / $3.50 / ยฃ2.75 / C$4.50 / A$5 per month. Pricing per currency is on the pricing page; if you pay from abroad, pick the currency that matches your card to avoid conversion fees.

Language and support

Expats often need support in their home language rather than the local one. IPTV-6 offers French support for France and Canada, German for Germany, Spanish for Spain and the US Hispanic market, Italian for Italy, and English everywhere, 24/7 in the English-speaking markets and 08:00 to midnight in the European ones. Payment methods match the home market too: Interac for Canadians, Bizum for Spaniards, SEPA for Germans, cards and PayPal everywhere.

A word on VPNs

Expats hear "just use a VPN" constantly. A VPN is a privacy and routing tool: it encrypts traffic from your device to the VPN server and can improve a bad route from a hotel network. It does not change which country's rights apply to what you watch, and it can make streams buffer if the server is far away. The neutral technical explanation is in ISP blocking and VPNs explained. Use one for the privacy it gives on public Wi-Fi; do not treat it as a legal solution.

Getting started

  1. Note the 30 channels from home you actually miss.
  2. Start the 24-hour free trial on the device you will use most and test at your local evening peak, using the plan in What to test during a free trial.
  3. Check the guide times against your local clock, and try catch-up on last night's news from home.
  4. Pick the plan by screens and catch-up window: annual for the 14-day window and two connections if family at home will share.

Every plan comes with a 7-day money-back guarantee, so the trial effectively extends for a week after you pay.

Domande frequenti

Can I watch UK TV abroad with IPTV?

Yes, technically. An IPTV subscription delivers channels over any internet connection, so BBC One, ITV1, Channel 4 and Sky Sports play the same way in Spain or Dubai as in Manchester. Whether a given channel is licensed for the country you are in is a separate question; broadcast rights are sold per territory, so check the rules where you live.

Does IPTV work on hotel or holiday-rental Wi-Fi?

Usually, but hotel networks often have captive portals that a Fire TV Stick cannot complete, and some block the ports streaming apps use. A phone hotspot is the reliable fallback for a few evenings. In a rental with normal Wi-Fi, a Fire TV Stick in your suitcase gives you home TV in five minutes.

How do I handle the time difference for live sport abroad?

The programme guide shows times converted to your device's time zone, so a 15:00 UK kick-off appears at 00:00 in Sydney. For matches at impossible hours, use catch-up to play the programme from the start the next morning; IPTV-6's catch-up window is 3 to 14 days depending on the plan.

Can my family in France and I abroad share one IPTV subscription?

The 6-month and annual plans include two simultaneous connections, which can be in different countries. Both households can watch at the same time on two screens; a third screen at once needs an extra-connection add-on. Each person installs the app on their own device with the same login.
