If you search for the best IPTV app you will find the same two names on every list: TiviMate and IPTV Smarters Pro. They take different approaches. TiviMate is a purpose-built Android TV guide that treats IPTV like a satellite receiver. IPTV Smarters Pro is a cross-platform player that runs almost everywhere and asks less of the user. We use both daily on Fire TV and Android boxes; this is a straight comparison of what each does well, what each does badly, and which one to install first.

Platforms: the deciding factor for many
This is the first question, and for a lot of people it ends the comparison.
TiviMate is Android only. It runs beautifully on a Fire TV Stick, an Nvidia Shield, a Chromecast with Google TV or any Android TV box, and adequately on an Android phone. It does not exist for iPhone, iPad, Apple TV, Samsung or LG Smart TVs, or Windows.
IPTV Smarters Pro runs almost everywhere. There is a version in the Samsung and LG app stores, an iOS and tvOS app, a Windows and macOS build, and of course Android and Fire TV. If your household has a Samsung TV in the living room and iPads in the bedrooms, Smarters is the one app that works on all of them with the same login.
The obvious approach, and the one we recommend, is to use TiviMate on the Android and Fire TV devices and Smarters everywhere else. Both accept the same Xtream Codes details from your IPTV-6 account.
The programme guide
TiviMate's guide is the reason it has such a loyal following. It is a full-screen grid that scrolls smoothly across days, shows the current programme in a preview window, and lets you jump by day or by hour. Pressing the guide button, moving to a channel and pressing OK feels like a good satellite receiver, which is exactly the point. The EPG loads automatically from an Xtream Codes login and refreshes on a schedule you set.
Smarters has a competent EPG in both list and grid form, and it also loads automatically from Xtream Codes. It is a little slower to draw and less pleasant to browse for long periods, but it does the job, and it shows a now-and-next line on the channel list so you can see what is on without opening the full guide.
If you spend a lot of time flicking through what is on, TiviMate wins clearly. If you go straight to a known channel, the difference is minor.
Catch-up and recording
Catch-up lets you play a programme that has already aired, using the provider's archive. IPTV-6 offers 3 to 14 days of catch-up depending on plan, and both apps expose it: in TiviMate you scroll left in the guide into the past and press play; in Smarters you open the channel's catch-up list.
TiviMate puts catch-up behind Premium. Smarters includes it free.
Recording is different: the app saves the live stream to local storage on the device. TiviMate (Premium) records reliably to a USB stick or the internal storage of an Android box, with scheduled recordings from the guide. Smarters can record on Android, but it is less reliable and less configurable. If you record a lot, TiviMate Premium on an Android box with a USB drive is the setup to build.
Channel management and layout
This is TiviMate's second big advantage. With Premium you can reorder groups, hide the countries you never watch, rename channels, set favourites into their own groups, and choose the layout of the channel list. For a 25,000-channel service such as IPTV-6, being able to hide everything except your own countries in five minutes makes the app much nicer to use.
Smarters offers favourites and lets you hide categories, but the ordering options are limited and the interface for managing them is fiddlier with a remote.
Performance and picture
Both apps use the same underlying Android decoders, so picture quality is identical for the same stream. What differs is responsiveness.
TiviMate switches channels faster, handles a large playlist with less lag, and, crucially for sport, supports frame-rate matching so the display switches to 50 Hz for European football. On a Fire TV Stick 4K it feels instantaneous.
Smarters is a little heavier. On older Fire TV Sticks the channel list can stutter when scrolling through thousands of entries, and the app takes longer to open. Its multi-screen mode, which shows up to four streams at once, is a genuine feature TiviMate does not have, although each stream counts as a connection.

Price
TiviMate is free for one playlist with a full guide, which is enough to evaluate it. Premium, which is a modest yearly fee, unlocks multiple playlists, catch-up, recording, favourites management and the layout options. Almost everyone who keeps using TiviMate ends up on Premium, and it is not expensive relative to any subscription.
IPTV Smarters Pro is free, with no premium tier that affects core features. On Fire TV it is sideloaded via the Downloader app; on other platforms it is in the official store.
Setup in each app
Both take under five minutes with an Xtream Codes login. In TiviMate, choose "Add playlist", then "Xtream Codes login", enter the server URL, username and password from your IPTV-6 welcome email, and let the channels and guide load. In Smarters, choose "Login with Xtream Codes API", enter the same three details, and tap "Add User".

- Beginners who want the simplest possible setup: Smarters, on any platform.
- Households with mixed devices: TiviMate on the Android devices, Smarters on the rest, same login for both.
