What an M3U playlist actually is
An M3U file is a plain text list. Each entry has a channel name, some tags (group, logo, an ID used to match guide data) and the address of the stream. When you paste the URL into an app, the app downloads that file and builds its channel list from it. That is all. There is nothing clever about it, which is precisely why it works in almost any player ever written, from VLC on a laptop to the most basic Smart TV app.
The limitations follow from the same simplicity:
- No guide data inside the file. The M3U links channels to guide IDs, but the schedule itself lives in a separate XMLTV file. You have to enter that EPG URL in the app's settings, and not every app can use it.
- Everything in one list. Live channels, films and series are all entries in the same file. With 25,000 channels and 120,000 VOD titles, an M3U from IPTV-6 is a very large file; some apps handle it well, others take a long time to load or crash on older devices.
- No catch-up. The playlist has no concept of the past. Some apps add catch-up support with extra tags, but it is patchy.
- Static. If a channel's address changes, the app does not know until it re-downloads the whole file.

What Xtream Codes actually is
Xtream Codes is an API, a set of web addresses the app calls to ask the server questions: "what categories exist?", "which channels are in Sports France?", "what is the guide for this channel?", "what episodes does this series have?". Instead of one big file, the app requests only what it needs, when it needs it.
The login is three pieces of information: the server URL, a username and a password. When you enter them in TiviMate or IPTV Smarters Pro, the app:
- Authenticates and reads your account details, including your expiry date and connection limit.
- Downloads the category list and populates live TV, films and series as separate sections.
- Fetches the programme guide for the channels you view, automatically, without a separate URL.
- Enables catch-up on channels that support it, linked to the guide so you can press play on a programme that finished an hour ago.
- Shows VOD with posters, descriptions and episode lists rather than a bare list of names.

When to use M3U
- On a computer with VLC. Paste the URL into "Open Network Stream" and you have live TV in ten seconds. Fine for a second screen or for testing whether your connection can handle the streams.
- On a Smart TV app that only accepts playlists. Many Samsung and LG store apps are M3U-only. IPTV Smarters Pro on those platforms accepts Xtream Codes and is usually the better choice, but if you prefer a particular playlist app, M3U is how you use it.
- In Kodi with the simple IPTV PVR client, which reads M3U and XMLTV directly.
- As a diagnostic. If a channel plays from the M3U in VLC but not in your TV app, the problem is the app or device, not the subscription. Support will sometimes ask you to try this.

Security and account hygiene
Both methods contain your credentials. An M3U URL has your username and password embedded in the link, which makes it easy to share by accident, for example by pasting it into a forum post or a screenshot. The Xtream Codes login is three separate fields and is harder to leak in one go, but the password is the same one.
Practical rules:
- Never post your M3U link or Xtream details anywhere public, including screenshots of your app settings.
- Do not share your login "just with a friend". Every stream counts against your connection limit, and providers, IPTV-6 included, will suspend accounts that show streams from many locations at once.
- If you think your link has leaked, ask support to reset it. On IPTV-6 that issues a new password and invalidates the old M3U URL.
Switching from one to the other
You do not need to cancel or reissue anything. In your app, add a new playlist or profile using the other method, with the details from your welcome email. Both entries will show the same channels. Once you are happy with the new one, delete the old. Your favourites may need setting up again, because most apps store favourites per playlist rather than per account.
